The VK9XG team will be operating from the Sunset Hotel which is a few km north of Flying Fish Cove, the capital of Christmas Island, located on the north-eastern tip of the Island.
We have access to all of the grass and dirt area in front of the hotel for antennas, but in addition we have hired the small building, ‘The Captain’s Last Resort’ just to the north of the hotel to give access to land sufficiently large for 160 and 80m verticals. There is a ocean take off from south by west, clockwise through to north by east, but unfortunately there are 15m cliffs from the sward down to the sea.
We will be operational on all bands from 160m through to 10m with the exception of 60m, where we have been unable to get a licence. Operational focus will be on CW, SSB, FT8 and perhaps RTTY. So why only a ‘perhaps’ for RTTY? Well since we announced our DXPedition another group (VK9XT) has decided to operate from the same hotel, two weeks earlier, between 29th September and 6th October. We understand that this team will be active on RTTY for the CQWW RTTY contest on 29th and 30th September. So VK9X will have been well serviced for RTTY QSOs and we anticipate a much larger demand for FT8. We hope to be able to operate 20m CW or SSB simultaneously with FT8 on 20m. Our plan is to operate FT8 DXpedition mode and ‘best practice’ operating information will be published soon on this page.
